This week in our conversation with Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital we’ll talk about the North Star Lodge and the many successful Cancer Trials that take place there.  It’s those kind of on-going studies that have lead to some encouraging new statistics.

A new report from the American Cancer Society found that cancer deaths in the U.S. have fallen 25 percent since hitting a peak in 1991.  Two reasons for the decline in cancer deaths are a significant reduction in smoking and the advances in early detection and treatment that the North Star trials help provide.

Cancer death rates have fallen steadily by about 1.5 percent each year for the past twenty years.   Fewer deaths from lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer have all played a role in the improving prognosis for cancer.
