Electronic cigarettes could be as harmful to gums and teeth as regular cigarettes. You want to do right by that smoker in the family so you think a Christmas package containing an E-Cigarette might help them quit..and it might, but don’t think there are no side effects.

In laboratory experiments, researchers at the University of Rochester in New York exposed nonsmokers' gum tissue to e-cigarette vapors. WebMD.com says their findings appear to counter arguments that the battery-operated devices are a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking. The vapors from an e-cigarette caused cells to release inflammatory proteins. That seems to aggravate stress within cells, resulting in damage that could lead to various oral diseases.

How much and how often someone is smoking e-cigarettes affects the extent of damage to the gums.

Bottom line, there’s probably a healthier way to help your family and friends kick the habit.
