You won't bee seeing any body cameras on Yakima Police officers anytime soon. Chief Dominic Rizzi says until the technology improves he doesn't see the need to purchase the cameras designed to protect officers from false accusations. He says the department has tested the body cameras and the chief says he wasn't impressed. "The resolution was fine but where they pointed to and what we picked up on the cameras was a lot of waist, chest and arm shots." As a result of the testing Rizzi says he doesn't think the cost, $500 to $1000 per camera would outweigh the benefit of the cameras. Currently Yakima Police officers have cameras in their vehicles and they wear microphones. The chief says he believes that protection for officers and the people they deal with is adequate. The Spokane County Sheriff is pushing to outfit 150 deputies with body cameras. The sheriff favors a video camera that would be mounted on glasses or ball caps so it would record what the deputy sees.
