New Slide Buries Sound Transit Tracks South of Mukilteo

SEATTLE (AP) — Sound Transit did not run Sounder train service Sunday for Seahawks fans because of the weather forecast calling for heavy rains.

Their precaution turned out to be warranted after another mudslide fell Sunday morning on the tracks about a mile south of Mukilteo.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said the slide dumped debris five feet high and 30 feet long including a 50-foot tree.

Melonas said a sensor on a slide fence alerted railroad officials to the 9:30 a.m. mudslide.

Sound Transit reported the Sounder train between Seattle and Everett won't be running again until at least Wednesday.

Passenger train service had been halted last week along the same route because of a mudslide last Wednesday.

Melonas said Monday's mudslide was the third in the same area in a week.
