• After a Federal judge threw out a six-state lawsuit last week, agriculture officials from those states are concerned other products could be banned from import into California based on production practices.

    A California law bars eggs from states that fail to provide larger cages for hens.

    The law, which will go into effect January first, requires at least 116 square inches of space per chicken. The industry standard is 67 square inches.

  • Mexico has announced an agreement to export Mexican beef to China.

    Reports state the two countries signed the deal during the recent Mexico-China Commission Meeting. The exports from Mexico are scheduled to start by the end of the year.

    The Minister of Agriculture of Mexico says this agreement also seeks to strengthen inspections and certification procedures. Both countries, according to the statement, recognized the importance of a bilateral commerce agreement that would generate more trust and understanding regarding food safety.

    The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China is considering visits to three Mexican beef processing plants.
