NATO TAKES COMMAND OF PART OF LIBYAN OPERATION:

NATO agreed late Thursday (March 24th) to take over command of part of the military operations against Libya -- the enforcement of the no-fly zone. However, the attacks on the ground will continue to be led by the U.S., despite the Obama administration being eager to give up the lead role. Some members of NATO apparently didn't want to be involved in attacks on ground targets, which have included Moammar Gadhafi's forces, and are meant to protect Libyan civilians. However, NATO agreed to begin military planning for a broader mandate, including a "no-drive" zone that would prevent Gadhafi's forces from moving against the rebels. A second Arab nation, the United Arab Emirates, has agreed to provide military assistance to the Libyan effort and will deploy 12 planes. Qatar is expected to begin flying air patrols this weekend.
