Even though next Tuesday is National Night Out Yakima Police say you don't have to wait until then to meet a neighbor. Community Services Officer Amy Hayes with the Yakima Police Department says when you know your neighbor and they know you you've created a great deterrent for crime. "If you know your neighbor and they know you when you see something odd or unusual you can call police."
Hayes says more than 35,000 homes exist in the city of Yakima and under 100 block watch programs are in operation. That's a lot but Hayes is hoping for more. However even if you're not inclined to start a program Hayes says take time to introduce yourself to your neighbors so you can protect your neighborhood from crime.  If you are having a party in your neighborhood contact Yakima Police at 575 6197 and they'll make sure an officer stops by and talks to you and your neighbors about how you can prevent crime.
