The current “great” recovery has more U.S. children living in poverty than before the Great Recession. A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation child advocacy group said that 22 percent of American children were living in poverty in 2013, compared to 18 percent in 2008.Poverty rates nearly double among African-Americans and American Indians, and the problem was worst in the South and Southwest.

Foundation President Patrick McCarthy said that an environment of poverty is particularly troubling as there is an increase in kids living in poor communities, regardless of their own families' economic situation.

One in seven children live in areas which have poor schools and lack a safe place to play. Such kids are more likely to fall down the economic ladder, less likely to be employed and more likely to get in trouble.
