The men said they found the idea of meeting such women as interesting and exciting. Then the men were actually introduced to woman whom researchers said did better on the same tests as the men.

Researchers say the men “distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive, and showed less desire to exchange contact information or plan a date with her."

According to a report in the U.K. Telegraph, the psychologists concluded the men felt threatened by the physical presence of a clever woman: "Feelings of diminished masculinity accounted for men’s decreased attraction toward women who outperformed them in the live interaction context."
