Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital is changing to make sure you stay healthy.

The hospital has joined the national Healthier Hospitals initiative to focus on improving health, reducing environmental impacts and lowering health care costs.

Bertha Lopez,  the hospital's director of community health, says one change at the hospital is healthier food in the cafeteria and in vending machines.

“Not necessarily eliminating the sugary beverages from our vending machines and cafes, but rather making sure you have healthier options in those areas. As well as a reduction in meat consumption and purchasing.”

Lopez says the hospital will also be purchasing more foods from local farmers and growers to benefit health and the local economy.

The hospital is also hoping to become more energy-efficient through the Healthier Hospitals initiative that kicks off this afternoon at the hospital.
