The first unofficial weekend of summer is here. What to do?

Memorial Day weekend is here, starting the summer travel season. Is it time to get out of town, or is it time to start that less expensive stay-cation?

There are pros and cons to both. Gas prices are hovering around four dollars per gallon, making a road trip a little more expensive. However this could mean fewer people on the road and fewer people booking hotel rooms at popular destinations. This has actually been my experience more than once while traveling to the Oregon coast, so if you're willing to put up with the high gas prices, it could pay off in other ways.

Take one of the day trips we told you about in our Short Hops series. See our beautiful valley and all it has to offer through the eyes of a tourist. And you may want to visit a local state park before proposed use fees kick in.

The Puget Sound area is always a great place to visit. The Mariners host the Yankees this weekend if you're so inclined, but keep in mind Snoqualmie Pass road construction, and that an M's game can be expensive for a family.

How about checking into a local motel?  Several in Yakima have indoor pools if it's not warm enough outside yet. This can be a really fun time!
