Deputies from the Yakima County Sheriff's office were called to the Rimrock Lake area early Saturday morning for a reported shooting. When they arrived in the area off South Tieton Road they found a 31-year-old man with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. Detectives say in a press release the victim and his family had been camping at the camp site for several days and had not seen any suspicious behavior and had not been involved in conflict with other campers. The victim went to bed Friday night and was awakened just prior to 2:00 a.m. with the sound of nearby gunshots and went to investigate when the victim was struck by gunfire from a nearby hillside. Deputies checked the area and found multiple shell casings as well as a rifle that had been abandoned.  The rifle had previously been reported stolen during a burglary in Yakima earlier this month.
The victim lives in the Seattle area and was camping with his family for the weekend.
