A 50-year-old man had his leg amputated after a crash at North 16th Avenue and Fruitvale Blvd. on Monday. Yakima Police spokesman Mike Bastinelli says Maximiliano Mendoza was selling oranges on the corner of 16th and Fruitvale when he was struck by a car driven by a 57-year-old Yakima man who told police he was having a medical problem when he struck Mendoza near the intersection. Bastinelli says "the victims leg was pinned between the two vehicles."
Police continue to investigate. Mendoza is recovering at a Yakima hospital Today. Police are waiting for toxicology results to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash reported at about 5:00 p.m. Monday.
