Oregon State Police say a male motorist who was pulled over on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles shot and wounded a state trooper Thursday.

The motorist drove off but was found nearby slumped over his steering wheel. He died at the scene. Neither man was immediately identified.

Lt. Gregg Hastings described the 26-year-old trooper's wound as "minor." He was treated at a nearby hospital for a gunshot wound to his side.

Hastings says three juveniles in the car with the motorist were unhurt and were taken to The Dalles for interviews.

The spokesman says the trooper had gotten out of his car after stopping the man for a traffic violation when the driver got out of his vehicle and shot at the trooper who fired back.

A section of I-84 was closed for several hours.
