Yakima County has recorded its first homicide of the year following the death of a man who authorities say was stabbed by his brother after an argument last month.

64-year-old Leonard Smith died Wednesday. He had suffered several stab wounds in the December incident, including a punctured lung. County Coroner Jack Hawkins says an autopsy determined Smith died from an infection related to the lung injury.

Deputies say 51-year-old Richard Smith stabbed his older brother at the home they shared with their mother after an argument over space heaters.

Richard Smith remains jailed on an assault charge, but authorities say he could soon be charged with murder after prosecutors review the case.
