The Yakima Union Gospel Mission is working with Yakima's Stone Church in a big clean up of North First Street on Saturday. The Executive Director of the Yakima Union Gospel Mission Mike Johnson says they'll clean North First between I Street and the Highway 12 Interchange. He says the area or the neighborhood experiences the impact of homelessness "and the mission is in the neighborhood and our job is to reduce the impact of homelessness."
Johnson says he wants the mission to be more pro-active on Saturday's calling the effort Serve Day Saturdays where he and others could get out of the mission and talk to people on the street. On Saturday, September 29 volunteers will prepare and serve a hot pancake breakfast to the homeless. Johnson says they expect to feed a pancake breakfast to 85 in the parking lot of the mission. After the breakfast teams will break up and begin a major clean up of North First Street.
