Have you thrown out a lot of garbage this Christmas season? Every year the city hauls 29,000 tons of garbage to the Terrace Heights landfill. Loretta Zamarchi is the Solid Waste and Recycling Manager for the city who says not all that waste goes into the landfill. "We are able to divert about 4,000 tons of waste through our yard waste program."
And while garbage collection is the main job the city refuse department also cleans up illegal dumps. More than 700 in 2017 were cleaned up. And  the department helps with community cleanups. Some 40 tons of refuse were collected during clean ups of area neighborhoods this year.
