The Yakima City Council will hold a public hearing next Tuesday to talk about a proposed smoking ban at Yakima parks.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke says the council hasn't taken a position on the proposal because he says they want to hear from the public first.

The council is considering multiple options. The city could ban smoking near playground equipment and during special events or just go for an all out ban at parks at anytime.

O’Rourke says he’s not for an all out ban. “I don’t see a need for that but just where’s there’s a large grouping of people particularly kids..that might be wise to restrict smoking.”

O'Rourke says many other cities have enacted smoke free park policies including parks in the Tri-Cities, Wenatchee, Ellensburg and Seattle among many other cities in Washington.

A public hearing is set for next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Yakima City Hall.
