Lefthandedness – Now One Less Thing For The Brain to Worry About

Some of my best friends are lefties. Heck, my wife, the mother of my right-handed daughter “the Gator” is a lefty!  There are so many rumors and myths and factoids  about the lives of the lefthanders – 7 to 10% of the population, more stress, more inconvenience, shorter life spans, even their own International Awareness Day on August 13^th, BUT now, one of those things that everybody thought they knew to be true has turned out to be false.

Dominant hand, left or right-handedness isn’t determined by something in the brain.  The brain initiates a hand or arm movement by sending a signal to the spinal cord, which then quickly translates the signal into the actual physical movement.

New research indicates  the preference for using the right or left hand is established as the spinal cord develops while a baby is still in the womb. (Elite Daily)
