Left or Right, Which Way Does Your First Name Lean?
What’s in a name? Politicians hope it’s a vote and a vote for them! Comparing political party donor records from 1996 to today, a clever company put together a list of hundreds of first names and determined how much was the average donation they made and to which party they made it. In the short term, the match ups are amazing!
For example if your name is Dylan, chances are you are a Democrat. If your first name is Cyndi you are probably a Republican – all based on the number of people with those first names who have donated in the past ten years.
We decided to test it out and entered the first names of the presidential candidates. Only Bernie (surprise) was outside his expected lane and only by a little. The front runners were the farthest to the left and right.
Ted 46.6% Democrats 53.4% Republicans Median contribution $500
John 42.3% Democrats 57.7% Republicans Median contribution $500
Donald 38.3% Democrats 61.7% Republicans Median contribution $398
Bernie 49.0% Democrats 51.0% Republicans Median contribution $500
Hillary 74.0% Democrats 26.0% Republicans Median contribution $500
Next we plugged in the region’s representative in congress and the state legislature. Again, all but one – Gina McCabe – matched their local party affiliation.
