The Washington State Patrol is investigating the death of a pedestrian in the Wapato area early Sunday morning.

Two cars were driving down Highway 97 near Lateral 1 shortly after midnight, when they struck an unnamed pedestrian who was standing in the highway. Both cars were in the same lane.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Officers are withholding the identity of the deceased pedestrian until they can notify the next of kin.

One of the cars, a 1994 Ford Mustang, was impounded at the scene. The other, a 1993 Honda Civic, was able to drive away.
