Yakima police hope to learn more as they investigate an officer-involved shooting from this past Saturday that took the life of 23-year-old Recendo Arias from Selah.

Capt. Rod Light says the department has received a written report from 29-year-old officer Casey Gillette detailing the incident.

Light says the report along with an account from an eyewitness who was riding with the officer will be the only evidence because no on scene video is available.

“Things were just out of sync. The position of his car meant that it didn’t record the incident and the on scene video was obstructed as well.”

The officer is speaking through an attorney as police continue to investigate the incident. A report will eventually be passed to the county prosecutor to determine if the shooting was justified.

Arias was shot and killed after the Selah man pointed a plastic gun at the officer who thought it was a real gun.
