NEW YORK (AP) — A DNA study says that an ancient skeleton found nearly 20 years ago in Washington is related to Native Americans. The finding could help resolve a long-running dispute over its ancestry and custody.
The skeleton, known as Kennewick Man, is about 8,500 years old. The new work argues against earlier suggestions that it wasn't connected to modern native people based on the features of its skull.
Some Native American tribes have sought custody of the skeleton so that it can be reburied. But that effort was blocked by a lawsuit that contended there was no evidence to tie the skeleton to modern tribes.
The new research is reported Thursday in the journal Nature.
