As reported earlier, a member of the Kansas City Chiefs committed suicide Saturday morning. While no motive has been released, the player’s name and more details in the tragedy have emerged. Linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend before driving to the Chiefs’ practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium and shooting himself in front of Coach Romeo Crennel and manager Scott Pioli.

In a statement released by the team, chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said, “The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today’s events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted.”

The statement also acknowledges that the team and organization will fully cooperate with authorities, as well as ensuring “the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members” who need it.

A police spokesman said authorities responded to the first shooting around 8 AM Saturday morning. “When we arrived [to the residence], a lady came out and said her daughter had been shot several times by her boyfriend.”

The spokesman went on to say, “About 10 minutes after that, we got a call here at Arrowhead stadium…As officers pulled up and began to park, that’s when they heard the gunshot.”

The Chiefs are scheduled to play the North Carolina Panthers on Sunday (Dec. 1). According to ESPN, the Panthers have been instructed to travel to Kansas City and proceed as normal, although there has been no official statement released by the NFL regarding the status of the game.

Belcher was 25-years-old and played college football at the University of Maine. He signed with the Chiefs in 2009.
