I've read many times that aromas and our sense of smell are some of the strongest memory stimulants there are, and I would have to agree. Let me explain.

I know that I've written about this before, but as I take my eight-year-old son out on my weekend errands with me, I realize that we're making some life long memories just like my dad did with me.

For instance, when we go to our neighborhood hardware store, I'm greeted with the smell of animal feed and vitamins. Right away, I remember trips to the feed store in Harrah with my dad. I remember that his coveralls smelled like sawdust, grease and cigarettes. I remember how special those trips were.

When I smell fresh cut grass in the fall, it takes me right back to high school football practice, and the smell of Vicks' Vapo-Rub reminds me of my mom, who would rub it on my chest when I had a cold when I was little.

What smells will spur my son's memories? Maybe the Febreze car air freshener in my Buick, or the smell that comes with walking into a Starbucks store. It could be the soap I use, or my cologne. It might be the aroma of burgers on the grill that he helps me flip over.

What ever memories those smells bring back, I want them to be happy ones.
