Somewhere Juan Valdez is smiling as more positive medical news continues to roll in about the benefits of coffee.  Yet another study confirms that a cup of Joes is not only a picker-upper, but also quite healthy. The study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that people who drank coffee were about 50 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to people who did not drink coffee.

Fox news reports this particular study is unique in that it may confirm a cause-and-effect hypothesis regarding coffee consumption and diabetes. The scientists followed 816 casual coffee drinkers, 385 habitual drinkers, and 239 non-coffee drinkers over a ten year period.. At the end of the study period, 191 of the original 1,300 participants had developed diabetes.

Those who reported drinking more coffee were less likely to develop the disease. They noted that lower levels of serum amyloid, an inflammatory marker found in the blood, were associated with drinking more coffee.   (Fox)
