Inslee Calls for School Levy Reform
When the Washington Supreme Court told the Legislature it needed to fix the way the state pays for public schools, it also ordered lawmakers to stop relying so much on local levy dollars to pay for basic education.
Levy reform has been a topic of discussion at every Legislative session since the 2012 Supreme Court decision in the so-called McCleary case. But Gov. Jay Inslee sidestepped the issue when he announced his education budget plans on Monday.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn and several lawmakers say levy reform is something the Legislature must tackle this year if it wants to satisfy the Supreme Court.
The governor says he chose not to address that issue because he believes he's dealing with equity in other ways.
