The annual count of the area's homeless is set for Jan. 31. It is called the Point In Time Survey and an important count to many area social service agencies. The numbers are used to gain valuable grants and other assistance to help the homeless in Yakima County. Every year the survey finds, on average, about a 1,000 to 1,200 people who call themselves homeless in the valley. Many volunteers are needed. In order to help with the survey, contact the Yakima County Department of Human Services.
