If you raise chickens in the Yakima Valley the Humane Society of the United States wants you to stop using small cages to confine hens. The group has filed an initiative in the State Legislature that would require larger cages, allowing the hens to turn around and extend wings. The measure also requires that eggs are produced under those conditions.

The initiative needs more than 242 thousand signatures by July 8th to qualify for the November ballot. A spokesman for the United Egg Producers say cages now used at area farms are best for hens, the environment and food safety.
