• Thousands of people filled the streets of downtown Yakima Saturday and Sunday for the 12th annual Hot Shots 3-on-3 basketball tournament.Teams from throughout the region competed on downtown streets that were closed from Friday night until Sunday evening.

    Rich Austin, director of sports for the Yakima Valley Sports Commission, called the event a success. “It was a very good year," he said. "We had the second best total ever, 463 teams.”

    Austin credits the hard work of those who organize the tournament and the area's central location for its continued growth. He says organizers are already planning for next year, when they hope to attract even more teams to play basketball in downtown Yakima.

    What's next for Yakima? The SunDome Volleyball Festival is set for Sept. 12-13.

  • A fire at Gallo Winery near Sunnyside Sunday morning caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.The cause of the fire is under investigation.

    Firefighters from Fire District 5 say the fire at 2300 Holmason Road was reported at about midnight and under control within two hours. Fire investigators are looking at a mechanical room as the origin of the fire.

    No injuries were reported. Firefighters say most of the damage is concentrated in the mechanical room.
