Homeless people living on property on East Chestnut Avenue will begin moving Today to property across from the Yakima Police Department at 3rd Street and Walnut. Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi has concerns about children who are victims of abuse who are brought to the station and offices near the new encampment for police interviews. "This is just more trauma on top of what they've already been going through especially if large groups are hanging around and might appear intimidating" As a result Rizzi says he'll evaluate the situation over the next week and if there are any problems he says he may ask the city to move people to another area. In the meantime city officials are giving notices to people living in East Yakima that they must move from the property to the lot on 3rd Street or find another place to live. Housing vouchers will be available next month so city officials say the new encampment by the police department is only temporary.
