Yakima's homeless encampment was closed at midnight last Friday and city officials have spent the week cleaning the area to turn it back into a city parking lot. And on Tuesday that's exactly what happened. Crews picked up garbage and ended the day by hosing off the area.
A majority of people who were living in the encampment on South 3rd Street now have the option of staying at cold weather shelters or the Yakima Union Gospel Mission.
The camp was operated during the summer months and at one time contained more than 100 people.
Yakima City Council members say they'll spend the winter looking at different properties to possibly open a permanent encampment in the spring.
