There's a lot of history in Yakima, and the Yakima historic preservation commission is awarding people and businesses in Yakima that have helped to preserve that history.

Nancy Kenmotsu, chair of the Yakima commission, says they've selected downtown property owner Joe Mann as the recipient of the society's Inspiration Award.

"He really supports recognizing the importance of these historic structures and he's constantly coming up with new ideas on how to support keeping what we have," Kenmotsu says.

She adds that the commission has chosen Almon Commercial Real Estate as the winner of the Project Category for its rehabilitation and preservation of the historic Liberty Building downtown.

Paul Shafer of Yakima has been given the Research Award for the research he's done on historical figures and properties.

The awards ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Yakima City Council chambers.
