High Temps Raising Fire Danger

KNDO

The heat wave in central Washington is bringing record highs for September and keeping local fire fighters on alert longer than usual.

West Valley firefighters tested their hoses Friday to make sure all equipment is fire ready. Deputy Chief Nathan Craig tells KNDO as the hot weather continues residents should be careful with equipment in their homes that can fail and possibly start a fire.

“When you get extended heat waves like this,” Craig said, “people’s air conditioners have been running and lots of equipment has been running for an extended periods of time you start getting failures in that equipment. You can have motors catch fire, things of that nature.”

Craig says his station has not seen a rise in fires this year due to the heat but he urges those burning outside to proceed with caution as fires could travel very quickly.
