They don’t call it “temptation” for nothing. It sits on the counter and silently beckons to you. “Just add Milk”, it whispers. We’re talking sly, seductive, cereal.

When it comes to food, the phrase "out of sight, out of mind" rings true in a new study published in the journal Health Education and Behavior. As reported in Women’s Health, researchers studied photographs of more than 200 households in Syracuse, New York where women of the house had at least two children under the age of 18.

They recorded and compared each woman's height and weight. What they discovered makes common sense given human nature and temptation. The women who kept cereal boxes sitting out on the counter weighed an average of 20 pounds more than those who did not. The numbers were even worse for those who left soda sitting out and readily available. Those women weighed 24 to 26 pounds more than their neighbors.

On the brightside, those who kept a fruit bowl out on the counter weighed about 13 pounds less.
