It's cold and the Yakima Fire Department is hoping you're being safe in the way you're heating your home. Capt. Jeff Pfaff says heating related fires are the most common at this time of year. He says just use some common sense at this time of year and you'll be safe. Pfaff says if you're using space heaters never place anything near or on top of them and never use an extension cord.
Pfaff says because it's cold and more people are spending time inside means there's a lot more risk of fire at this time of year. He says heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths.
Half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.
