Today Marvel Comics characters rule the silver screen with mega-movies like The Avengers, Ironman, Captain America, The X-Men, Wolverine, Thor and the Hulk and the much anticipated Ant-Man.  But back in the day, DC comics ruled the world of imagination and Superman was top dog of steel. In fact on this day in 1938 Superman made his first appearance in D.C.’s' Action Comics Series first issue.

The issue is credited with launching the wave of super hero comics and a pristine copy is considered the mother of all comic  books with a collectors value estimated at $1,750,000.

Back in 1988 Time Magazine estimated the Superman franchise at over a billion dollars which is chump change today.  The first six Super movies going back to Christopher Reeves in the mid 70’s brought in over 800-million .  Standby for the next Superman movie coming out next year: Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice.

And to think the multi-billion dollar super cash register started ringing 73 year ago today.
