When major soccer tournaments come to Yakima, there's usually a shortage of soccer fields. But that's about to change.

A ground breaking ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday for the new $13 million Yakima Sports Complex at 2210 S. 38th Ave.

The Yakima City Council earlier this year approved an agreement with Sozo Sports of Central Washington to create the 17-field soccer complex, which also has an indoor facility. Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke says "it's going to be a huge asset for sports in the valley, but also a huge asset economically as well." He says the facility will draw thousands of people year round because it includes an indoor facility.
Meanwhile Union Gap plans to create new soccer fields at Ahtanum Youth Park later this year or next.
