BRIEFS: Shooting and Graffiti Cleanup

Yakima Police image
  • A 22-year-old man is in critical condition at a Yakima hospital today after a shooting near 8th Avenue and Mead Thursday night.

Yakima Police say an argument between the 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old suspect lead to the shooting. It was reported at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Police say after the two argued the 15-year-old suspect grabbed a gun from a nearby home and fired shots that struck the 22-year-old victim.

Officials aren’t saying if the shooting was gang related. Police are searching for the suspect.

  • Yakima’s Neighborhood Development Services is busy painting out graffiti in the city of Yakima.

Senior Program Supervisor Orville Otto says unfortunately they can’t just cover up graffiti when it’s spotted by someone. They need the permission of the property owner.

And until this year the city didn’t remove graffiti from businesses. Otto says many businesses and homeowners have signed permission slips that are on file and when graffiti is spotted neighborhood development takes action.

So far this year he says between 150 and 200 businesses have signed permission slips so the city can constantly be on the lookout for graffiti.
