In addition to picking Donald Trump as the Republican Presidential nominee, next week’s convention in Cleveland will also see nearly 25-hundred delegates wrestle with the party platform.

The platform has been described as “a formal set of principal goals which are supported by a political party or individual candidate, in order to appeal to the general public, for the ultimate purpose of garnering the general public's support and votes about complicated topics or issues.”  This is anything but a typical political year and so this year’s Republican platform takes on a new significance.

Philip Wegman writes for the Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal and he says this year’s platform is a tool to “tether the New York businessman, whose campaign has taken a hands-off approach to the platform, to certain conservative orthodoxies. “

Wegman says On immigration, the platform committee has gone in the direction of the party’s nominee, delivering the party’s most aggressive immigration plank in recent memory.”  On marriage and gender issues -“ Republicans also offered a rebuttal to the administration’s bathroom directive by limiting the use of multiple occupant bathrooms in public buildings to those of the same biological sex.”

National Defense and International Trade are a couple of other important planks in the GOP vision for America’s future. Check out Wegman’s article in full http://dailysignal.com/2016/07/13/what-2016-gop-platform-pushes-on-4-key-issues/?
