It’s Father’s day.   A day for Dad to be pampered, a day for Dad to indulge in his favorite grub, a day for…wait.  Maybe you better hold off on that two plate approach to your favorite foods today.  Time  reports on a new study that says we should park the plate a lot more often! The study shows that fasting periodically may be the key to living longer.   The results indicate that occasionally cutting back on calories improved health, notably in areas that worsen with age.

In the study groups of people who underwent three monthly cycles of a five day diet that mimics fasting experienced a drop in risk factors related to aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

That’s exciting but how low do we need to go to get there?

The diet means individuals must cut calories down to between 34 and 54 percent of their normal consumption. That comes out to about five days of 750 – 1,050 calories per day, with very specific amounts of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and micronutrients.

The specifics of the study show that what  looks like a low calorie plant-based diet, is in fact,  designed to turn on stem cells and trigger regenerative effects and beneficial changes in many risk factors for aging and diseases.
