The first meeting of the new year for the Yakima City Council is set for Tuesday at city hall. The council has a busy agenda. They'll be talking about possibility of establishing a new homeless encampment at the former Tiger Mart located at 1808 North 1st Street. The council will also talk about sanctuary cities.
The council is also expected to talk about the Downtown Central Plaza.
It's been approved by the council now it's just a matter of time before all the money is in place to start construction say city officials. Tuesday the plaza committee will make a presentation to the council on the additional funding needed to complete the project. Plaza committee member Kelly Connaughton says they're looking for about $4 million in new pledges in 2017. "One big donor could be out there. But the thing that makes this so important is that it's an opportunity to get everyone involved regardless of the dollar amount that they're able to contribute."

So far the city has about $5.3 million and the remaining amount still needs to be raised for the $12 million project. You can donate and learn more about the project at yakimacentralplaza.com
