Conserving water this summer is the key to making it through this drought say state officials. Growers aren't the only ones getting involved; firefighters are also doing what they can to conserve water.  In an effort to help local growers the West Valley Fire Department is working to limit water use this summer during training exercises, that means they'll be practicing with dry hose lines.
They'll also try to drain all hoses onto green or vegetated areas.

Fire Chief Dave Leitch says they've never seen a drought like this one before and they want to do all they can for their community.

“A large part of our fire district is agriculture and it just didn't seem right if we're wasting water and they're trying to save water. We're getting the guys in a mindset we really do need to do our part and be conscientious of where the waters going,” Chief Leitch explained.

While they will look for ways to save water outside of an emergency, the drought won't stop them from protecting the community during a fire.

West Valley Fire will also stop washing personal vehicles between May and December.
