Wildfire is a big concern for area firefighters as we approach the 4th of July. Fireworks are banned in many cities including the city of Yakima and in the unincorporated areas of Yakima County. Yakima County Fire Marshal Jackie MacLean says while fireworks are legal to buy in some cities and on the Yakima Reservation they're banned for sale and use in most areas. "Over 90% of the population complies with the laws but there's a few that buy them on the reservation or cities and they discharge." And when those fireworks cause fires firefighters get busy. Officials with Fire District Five in the lower valley say last year was a tough year with 52 fires reported on the 4th of July. Only 23 were reported in 2014. Chief Kevin Frazier says he's hoping for a smaller number of fires this year. He says they've been burning large fields of grass and brush to prepare and working closely with the Yakima Nation. Fireworks on the reservation are legally only supposed to be sold to enrolled members of the tribe for use on tribal land.
