LUCERNE, Wash. (AP) — The Wolverine Fire along Lake Chelan grew overnight, and continues to spew smoke across parts of Eastern Washington.

Fire spokesman Bill Queen says the blaze grew by about 1,200 acres on Monday, and is being fought by 257 firefighters. It now covers 25,634 acres, or 40 square miles

The Wolverine Fire started June 29 in remote timber and grass on the west side of the lake. Several hundred people have been evacuated from a Lutheran retreat center and the Holden Mine Remediation Center.

The blaze also shut down a section of the Pacific Crest Trail and several campgrounds.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning for much of Eastern Washington, effective through Tuesday evening.

Fire danger is considered "extreme" in Spokane and portions of Lincoln and Stevens counties.
