A special child safety seat check is underway in Yakima County and across the state this week. Authorities are working overtime to find drivers who don't have kids buckled up correctly in child safety seats or seat belts.

Police say many motorists find child safety seats frustrating to install, which frequently results in improper use.

"We find about 90 percent misuse and some of that misuse is minor," says Camille Becker, the Target Zero manager for the Yakima Police Department. She says parents and guardians commonly install the seats incorrectly because each vehicle and each seat is different and requires a different technique to install correctly.

Becker's best advice? Follow the directions for both the seat and the car or contact her at 509-406-0629.
