Last year 26 people died in Yakima of drug overdoses. On August 31 those people and others will be remembered during International Overdose Awareness Day at Franklin Park. Event coordinator Kim Hitchcock with Triumph Treatment Services in Yakima says it'll be a time for people to stand together with those who've lost family members and friends to drug overdoses. "My hope is that we can re-enforce the idea that no one need to feel any shame or disgrace at the death of someone lost to an overdose."
Speakers are planned and family and friends are encouraged to bring pictures of those who've died.
Overdose Awareness Day, the first time the event has been held in Yakima is set for Thursday, August 31 at Franklin Park beginning at 3:00 p.m.
