Drivers Shifting to New US 97 Butler Creek Bridge Monday

WSDOT image

Drivers on US 97 north of Goldendale will move from a temporary bridge to a new, permanent wildlife connectivity bridge over Butler Creek by 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10.

The work zone speed limit on US 97 remains 35 mph while crews working with the Washington State Department of Transportation continue construction activities in the area. Wide load restrictions will also be lifted Monday.

The Butler Creek area has an abundant wildlife population, and animals often cross US 97 to reach food and habitat on either side of the highway. The new bridge will help reduce the number of wildlife collisions by providing a channeled crossing for animals to travel underneath US 97.

The bridge also improves fish habitat in Butler Creek by eliminating a fish barrier culvert and widening the streambed.

The $2.9 million gas tax-funded project is scheduled for completion in spring 2013.
