SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — An effort to recall Spokane Mayor David Condon has been filed with the Spokane County Auditor.

The recall charges were filed on Tuesday afternoon, and involve controversy that has surrounded the recent firing of Police Chief Frank Straub.

As required by state law, the charges will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor, who is responsible for writing the ballot synopsis.

A Spokane County Superior Court judge must ultimately determine if the charges rise to the level of misfeasance, malfeasance or violation of oath of office.

Condon last year became the first Spokane mayor in four decades to win re-election.

Former Spokane Mayor Jim West was recalled in 2005 amid allegations of a sex scandal, even though he was never charged with a crime.
