The kids are back to school across the Yakima valley and in many schools they don’t get in the door unless their vaccinations are up to date. But CBS News reports that pediatricians say more than ever before, they're encountering more and more parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated because they don't see the point of vaccines.

A new survey published in the American Academy of Pediatrics found that about 87 percent of pediatricians said they had encountered parents who refused vaccines for their kids. Between 2006 and 2013 that was an increase from 75 percent of docs who said they saw the same thing.

The most common reason, provided by three out of every four parents is they believe vaccines are unnecessary because the diseases they prevent have been wiped out in the United States.

But doctors that thought process is short sighted, misleading and dangerous. The medical community points out that's because the diseases the vaccines are designed to prevent still exist in many other parts of the world.  They warn illnesses is just a plane ride away.
